Seven is a deeply disturbing but fascinating character study into the mind of a serial killer. It involves two detectives, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. Morgan Freeman is an experienced and calm detective while Brad Pitt is the young detective with more to prove and a hot temper to boot. He is also married to Gwyneth Paltrow, a young, beautiful woman that is pregnant. The serial killer, played by Kevin Spacey in one of his first well-known roles, is clever (some would say brilliant) and plainly diabolical in the brutality of his kills and murders. He has everything designed according to plan and his work is planned out to mirror the seven deadly sins of the Saint James Bible. It involves Lust, Greed, Wrath and the other four sins that involve each of his victims. The beauty and darkness of the movie involves the scenery and cinematography. The locale of Seattle which is constantly dark, grainy and filled with rain, gives a great environment for the movie's subject. The constant rain adds to the darkness and gloominess of Seven. The mood is depressing, deadly and macabre. The beautiful aspect of the movie is that the director does not focus on the blood and gore of the movie. Full of low-lighting and quick glimpses, Seven just shows the murder scene briefly. It does not glamorize or give the audience more than they can handle when showing the murders, making it tasteful in a way. The character played by Kevin Spacey is set in not only planning his kills according to the Bible but also to get to the mind of Brad Pitt's character. The serial killer taunts Brad Pitt towards the end of the movie by giving him clues as to his last act, the masterpiece of his murder spree. At the end of this movie, Mr. Spacey's character will reveal the horror of his work that will change Brad Pitt's life forever.
