Stella, a 1990 drama film directed by John Erman, tells the story of Stella Claire (Bette Midler), a working-class mother who raises her daughter, Jenny (Trini Alvarado), on her own after the death of her husband. Set in the early 1960s, the movie follows Stella's struggles to provide for her daughter and to find love for herself. The movie begins with Stella working as a waitress in a bar, where she meets the charming and good-hearted Stephen (Stephen Collins). The two hit it off and begin a whirlwind romance, but when Stella becomes pregnant, Stephen is hesitant to commit to her and leaves her alone to raise their child. Stella is devastated but determined to provide the best life possible for her daughter, Jenny. She takes on odd jobs to make ends meet, and eventually becomes a successful businesswoman, owning her own restaurant.

As Jenny grows up, Stella becomes overprotective of her, wanting to shield her from the harsh realities of the world. In contrast, Jenny longs for independence and to experience life outside of their small town. Their relationship becomes strained as Stella struggles to let her daughter spread her wings and find her own path.

Along the way, Stella meets a variety of characters, including the kind-hearted Ed Munn (John Goodman), who becomes a close friend and confidant to Stella. As the years go by, Stella's relationship with Ed grows into a romantic one, but Stella is hesitant to commit to another man after being hurt by Stephen years earlier.

Despite the obstacles that Stella and Jenny face, they continue to persevere and love each other deeply. The movie culminates in a heart-wrenching climax that will leave viewers feeling both hopeful and bittersweet.

One of the standout features of the movie is the incredible performance by Bette Midler. She portrays Stella with a depth and emotion that is both captivating and raw. Her character's determination and love for her daughter are palpable throughout the movie, and viewers will undoubtedly find themselves rooting for her to succeed.

John Goodman also delivers an excellent performance as Ed, bringing a sense of warmth and heart to the character. His chemistry with Midler is undeniable, and their scenes together are some of the most touching and heartfelt moments in the movie.

Trini Alvarado's portrayal of Jenny is also noteworthy, as she brings a sense of innocence and longing to the character. Her relationship with Midler's Stella is the backbone of the movie, and their scenes together offer a sense of hope and love that will resonate with viewers.

In terms of themes, the movie explores the idea of motherhood and the lengths that a mother will go to in order to provide for her child. It also delves into the concept of love and self-sacrifice, as both Stella and Ed put their own desires aside in order to support each other and their families.

Overall, Stella is a beautiful and emotional movie that will tug at viewers' heartstrings. With breathtaking performances from its cast and a poignant storyline, it is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates a good drama.
