The Legend of Bagger Vance is an inspirational sports film with some fantasy components set in 1930's Savannah, Georiga. The film follows former World War One veteran, Captain Rannulph Junnuh, who is slated to compete with two golfers, Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones, in an upcoming tournament. As a favor to his former girlfriend, Adele Invergordon, Junnuh must find the skills he once had to save face at the country club. Junnuh hasn't played since returning from the trenches and has been consumed with battling his own trauma, depression and alcohol problems from being deployed.
Bagger Vance mysteriously appears to Junnuh and begins caddying and offering guidance to the drunken veteran. When the match begins, Junnuh is far behind, but slowly regains ground and closes the distance between himself and professionals Hagen and Jones. As Junnuh progresses, his romance with Adele starts to rekindle. By the final match Junnuh has made tremendous personal growth as well as in the game. When he decides to disregard Vance's advice things become unraveling on the fairway for Junnuh. Struck with flashbacks, Vance kindly refocuses Junnuh to the present and he's able to pull ahead and tie the match.
At the end of the tournament Junnuh is presented an opportunity to win, but chooses to call a penalty on himself for the integrity of the game and himself. With so much progress made, Vance feels he can leave Junnuh to continue his life without his caddy and disappears. The tournament ultimately ends in a three- way tie and Junnuh is reunited with his former love Adele.
Based on the 1995 book The Legend of Bagger Vance by Steven Pressfield, The Legend of Bagger Vance film was directed by Robert Redford and released in 2000.
