"There Be Dragons" is an epic historical drama that takes place during the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s. The film follows the story of two childhood friends, Josemaría Escrivá (Charlie Cox) and Manolo Torres (Wes Bentley), who grow up to have very different paths in life. Josemaría becomes a priest and starts a religious movement called Opus Dei, while Manolo becomes a reporter and a spy for the Spanish Nationalists under Francisco Franco.

The film is directed by Roland Joffé, who also co-wrote the script with Michael Love. Joffé is known for his work on other epic period dramas such as "The Killing Fields" and "The Mission," and his talent for sweeping cinematography and gritty realism is on full display in "There Be Dragons."

The film does not shy away from the brutal realities of war, and the scenes of violence and political turmoil are both terrifying and heartbreaking. But at the heart of the story is the complicated relationship between Josemaría and Manolo, who find themselves on opposite sides of a conflict that threatens to tear them apart forever.

Charlie Cox delivers a standout performance as Josemaría, a man who is deeply committed to his faith and his mission to help others, even in the face of violent persecution. Dougray Scott also shines as Robert, a British journalist who becomes involved in the conflict and forms a close bond with Josemaría.

But it is Wes Bentley who steals the show as the conflicted Manolo, whose loyalty to his country and his family is constantly at odds with his own conscience. Bentley's portrayal of a man pushed to the brink of desperation by the horrors of war is both haunting and unforgettable.

"There Be Dragons" is a powerful and thought-provoking film that explores themes of faith, loyalty, and sacrifice in the face of unimaginable adversity. With stunning visuals, strong performances, and a gripping story that will stay with you long after the credits roll, this is a must-see for fans of historical dramas and war movies alike.

There Be Dragons is a 2011 war movie with a runtime of 2 hours. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.7 and a MetaScore of 33.
