Robert De Niro is a war-hardened penitent on a quest to please the Spanish Empire and appease God for the restoration of his soul. Jeremy Irons is a conversion-minded Jesuit priest who has a love for the new world. These two are brought together in a strange twist to the jungles of South America. They both encounter natural and wild wonders and dangers while searching for the path to their own redemption. While interned with a remote and primitive tribe on the brink of annihilation from encroaching conquistador regimens, these two European adventurers must choose between loyalty the crown, or the new friendships they earn in the wild.

Also featured is a ground-breaking soundtrack by acclaimed composer Ennio Morricone with voices from the tribal children of the cast. The Mission is a harsh look back at the European conquest of South America, but is also an intimate story of one man's redemption in the eyes of his friends, his order, and God.
