The Kings, wealthy owners of an expiring land trust in Hawaii, are gathering in Honolulu to decide the fate of 25,000 acres of unspoiled lands, nearly the last real paradise the Pacific islands possess. At the head of the decision is lawyer Matt King, (George Clooney), whose life has taken a dramatic turn for the worse when his disloyal wife Elizabeth is rendered incurably comatose by a water-skiing accident. Complicating the decision are his many cousins, who are in conflict over whether to give up the land to development or fight to preserve the untouched land for future generations of the family. Closest to Matt is Hugh (Beau Bridges), an amiable cousin who has spent most of his inheritance and needs the money to continue his wealthy lifestyle. The deal is set to proceed, but Matt is forced to take time to individually tell his large family the Elizabeth's living will dictate her life-support be discontinued, and to say their goodbyes. This requires reconnecting a rocky relationship with two daughters, Scottie and Alex, (Amara Miller and Shailene Woodley), though Alex has for secret reasons has not spoken to her mother in a year. As Matt grows closer to his daughters, learning from them the extent of his wife's infidelity, he becomes obsessed with meeting and confronting his wife's lover, Brian (Matthew Lillard). Accompanied by his eldest daughter, a jaded teen with a history of substance abuse, and her moronic friend, Matt delays the land-trust decision to discover tell Brian of Elizabeth's fate, and give him a chance to say goodbye before she is removed from life-support. As they discover more about the Elizabeth's life and plans, Matt realizes how disconnected from his life and family he and his wife has really become, and hopes to find a way to forgive Elizabeth, reconnect with his family, and live with consequences of the upcoming deal.
