Hester Prynne (played by Demi Moore) has arrived from England to seek her independence. She is waiting for her husband while befriending various Quakers in order to set up her new house. As the time passes, she becomes enamored with Arthur Dimmesdale (played by Gary Oldman) who is a young minister. Arthur is also enamored with Hester. When they become aware that her husband probably was murdered by Indians, they begin a relationship. Hester becomes pregnant and is imprisoned for these indiscretions. Arthur visits the prison and tells Hester that he will declare himself to be the father to spare her. Hester does not want him to, citing that it would be unbearable to see him hang. Hester gives birth in prison and is followed throughout town and humiliated by having to wear a Scarlet letter A for her adultery. On the very same day, her husband arrives with Indians after a year in absentia. As Dr. Chillingworth he seeks to find Hester's lover to get revenge. He then attacks a man who rides from Hester's house, scalping him while disguised as an Indian. When villagers discover what he has done, they blame Indians and proceed to publicly judge them. Guilt-ridden, Hester's husband hangs himself. Arthur discovers Hester’s husband’s dead body, admitting to being Hester's baby’s father. He offers his life in place of hers. Just before he is killed, the Indians save them and a battle ensues. Their daughter, Pearl reveals that Arthur died before she became a teen and that her mother never remarried.
