The story of the film "To Rome with Love" is another romantic comedy plot from the mind of Woody Allen, an array of vignettes that tell the story of how love can be very complicated in the Eternal City. The first installment of the film is about an Amercian woman who falls in love with an Italian lawyer, only to have complications arise when certain situations present themselves. The plot thickens when the lawyer's father, who had changed careers from a failed opera singer to mortician, is overheard singing in the shower. The man who tries to encourage the older man's gift is accused by the lawyer of ill intentions after a fiasco at the opera audition; thinking creatively, he decided to write in a shower for the Opera of Pagliacci to help with the older man's stage fright. After realizing his dream to sing opera the lawyer's father has gained the confidence to make his dream of singing Pagliacci come true.
The second installment concerns two Italian newlyweds who arrive from a local rustic town to the city of Rome. The husband's family is awaiting the arrival of the couple for a lunch date to discuss the husband's future in the family business. Much to the chagrin of the wife, she loses her cell phone at the worst possible time, leaving the husband alone with a prostitute in a compromising position. Desperate, the prostitute is introduced as the wife to the family and friends of the husband. Meanwhile the wife is at lunch with a famous actor who has designs on seducing her. After settling the confusion, the couple decides to leave Rome in favor of a more quiet pace.
The last two vignettes are more like modern fables that underline the pitfalls of human nature and the true values that people live by.
