Ep 5. Better Call Saul

Carrie and Saul are back in the game. After last week's detour with their home lives, the two are once again working together to try and stop Iran. Saul is over in Berlin at the CIA station trying to get the support he needs to carry out his covert mission, while Carrie is back in the States trying to track down an asset.

The episode starts off with Carrie and her team trying to get information on a new asset called Hector. They've got his phone number and are tracking him using cell tower data, but haven't been able to put a name to the number yet. Carrie is working with her sister to try and get a location on Hector, but things get complicated when she starts getting phone calls from her estranged mother.

Meanwhile, in Germany, Saul is meeting with Allison, the CIA station chief, to try and convince her to let him go ahead with his plan to recruit an Iranian general. Saul is convinced that this is their best chance to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, but Allison is hesitant to sign off on it. She's worried about the political fallout if the mission is discovered, and tells Saul that he needs to get the White House's approval before proceeding.

Back in the States, Carrie is trying to juggle her family issues and her work. Her mother is sick and needs her help, but Carrie can't let her personal life affect her job. She's determined to find Hector and get the information they need to stop Iran. Her sister tries to get her to talk to her mother, but Carrie brushes her off.

Saul meets with Dar Adal, his former boss and mentor, to try and get his help in convincing the White House to approve the mission. Dar is skeptical, but Saul manages to convince him that this is their only chance to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Carrie finally gets a break in the Hector case when she realizes that he's been using a burner phone. She tracks down the store where he bought it and gets a description of him from the store clerk. With this information, she's able to positively identify Hector and sets up a meeting with him.

Saul meets with the President's Chief of Staff to try and convince him to approve the mission. He lays out his case, but the Chief of Staff is still hesitant. He tells Saul that he needs more information and that the President needs to be briefed before anything can happen.

Carrie and her team set up a surveillance operation to capture Hector. They're able to track him to a hotel, but things quickly go wrong when Hector spots them. He takes off running, and Carrie gives chase. The two of them end up having a brutal fight in the hotel stairwell, but Carrie is ultimately able to overpower him and get the information they need.

Saul gets a surprise visit from his estranged wife, Mira. She's concerned about him and wants to know what he's up to. Saul tries to tell her that he's working on a sensitive mission and can't divulge any details, but Mira presses him for answers. Saul finally tells her about the plan to recruit the Iranian general, and Mira is shocked. She tells Saul that he's putting himself in danger and that he needs to be careful.

Carrie returns to the States, triumphant that they were able to get the information they needed. She meets with Saul, who tells her that their plan has hit a snag. The White House is still hesitant to give the go-ahead, and time is running out. Carrie suggests that they talk to the Iranian general directly and try to convince him to defect. Saul is skeptical, but Carrie is convinced that it's their best shot.

The episode ends with a tense meeting between Carrie and the Iranian general. She tries to convince him to defect, but he's hesitant. He tells her that he needs to think about it, and Carrie knows that time is running out. She leaves the meeting frustrated, wondering if they'll ever be able to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
