Through the Looking Glass (1) is the twenty-second episode of season three of the highly acclaimed television drama series Lost. The episode was written by Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof and directed by Jack Bender. Aired for the first time on May 20, 2007, the episode is the first of a two-part season finale.

The episode begins with the introduction of a new character, a man named Jacob. This enigmatic figure had been mentioned briefly in previous episodes but had never been seen before. We learn that Jacob is the leader of the Others and holds a great deal of power on the island. After an intense conversation with one of his followers, it is revealed that Jacob has been communicating with many of the principal characters through a variety of means. This realization sets the tone for the rest of the episode, hinting at a deeper level of complexity to the series than had previously been seen.

The episode then jumps to our protagonists, the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 who have been stranded on the island for over two months. The first half of the episode focuses on Jack, one of the show's main characters, and his desperate attempts to get off the island. Jack believes that the Others have his friend and fellow survivor Walt and will only give him back if Jack agrees to leave the island. With the help of Juliet, another member of the Others, Jack is able to communicate with people outside of the island and makes progress in his efforts to leave. However, as the situation unfolds, Jack begins to realize that the true intentions of the Others might not be what he had believed.

While all of this is happening, a parallel story is taking place which involves the other half of the protagonists, who have gathered together on the beach. Here we see some of the most intense moments of the episode as the survivors come under attack from unknown assailants. What begins as a seemingly minor skirmish quickly turns into an overwhelming battle as the protagonists fight for their lives against a group of people who have never been seen before.

What sets this episode apart from other episodes of Lost is its structure. Instead of a traditional linear narrative, the episode tells two stories that run concurrently but in different parts of the island. This approach adds a sense of urgency and momentum, as both storylines move towards a single climactic moment.

The episode features some of the best acting of the series, particularly from Matthew Fox as Jack. Fox portrays Jack's desperation and determination with a level of intensity that is both captivating and heartbreaking. We also see strong performances from Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet, Terry O'Quinn as Locke, and Naveen Andrews as Sayid.

Through the Looking Glass is a masterful episode, taking the already complex world of Lost and adding a new layer of intrigue and mystery. The episode ends on a dramatic cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager to see what happens next. It is an excellent example of why Lost is so highly regarded and remains a beloved show among fans.
