Agantuk - The Stranger is a Bengali drama film released in 1991, directed by renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray. It was Ray's last film, and it starred Utpal Dutt, Deepankar De and Mamata Shankar in lead roles. The film is based on Ray's own short story, 'Atithi', which was published in 1989. The story is about a middle-aged man named Sudhindra Bose (played by Deepankar De) who lives with his wife Anila (played by Mamata Shankar) and son in Kolkata. One day, a letter arrives at their home from an unknown person informing them that an old friend of Bose's, Manomohan Mitra, is coming to their city after 35 years of absence. Bose is surprised, as he had lost touch with Mitra and assumed he was no longer alive. Meanwhile, Anila is skeptical about the stranger coming to their home, but Bose is overjoyed and eagerly awaits the arrival of his old friend.

When Mitra finally arrives, he introduces himself as a 'stranger' and an uncivilized man who had lived in a remote forest tribe in India for the last 35 years. He is played by the famous actor Utpal Dutt, who does an excellent job of portraying the role of a stranger who doesn't fit into the modern society he has returned to. He is unaccustomed to the bustling city life of Kolkata and questions the culture and values of urban society.

Mitra's arrival creates a stir in the household, as he clashes with Anila, who finds his ways strange and uncivilized. As the film progresses, we see Mitra's interactions with different people in the city, including Anila's brother, a close friend of Bose's and a businessman. We get to see the different perspectives of these characters and how each of them views the stranger.

The film highlights the cultural differences between the city and the countryside as Mitra's beliefs and ideals clash with modern urban values. It also explores the themes of identity, alienation, and the conflict between tradition and modernity. The cinematography is excellent, with Kolkata's bustling streets contrasting with the quiet, picturesque village where Mitra spent most of his life.

Agantuk - The Stranger is a thought-provoking film that raises important questions about modern society and the ways in which we define ourselves. It is a fitting end to Satyajit Ray's illustrious career, and Utpal Dutt's performance as the stranger is one of the highlights of the film. The film's ending is poignant and leaves the viewers with much to ponder about. Overall, it is an excellent film that should not be missed.
