As I Lay Dying is an experimental film and adaption of the great American writer William Faulkner’s famed novel of the same name. Like the novel, the movie is a stream of consciousness story, told from multiple perspectives of a rural town in Mississippi. The area is not only rural, but greatly poverty stricken. A local fame;y are determined to bury their late matriarch, Addie, in Jefferson, Mississippi, and the movie documents their painful journey to honor Addie’s wishes both physically, mentally, and financially. The family is a unique one and is filled with characters including the widowed father, Anse, and his son Darl. There are also Jewel, Cash, Vernon, and Dewey, all siblings wanting to put their two cents into the family’s decision. The movie chronicles the adventure of moving Addie to her proper burying spot and continually shifts perspectives of the family members.
