Directed by Jennifer Chambers Lynch (daughter of famed writer/director David Lynch), Boxing Helena is the story of Dr. Nick Cavanaugh (Julian Sands) and his downward spiral into madness, and the lengths his madness will take him to possess his true desire. Nick is a troubled surgeon, haunted by issues from his childhood that stem from his cold-as-ice mother, who was an unfaithful socialite, and by premature ejaculation. After a one night stand, he becomes obsessed with his neighbor Helena (Sherilyn Fenn), even though he is somewhat involved with Anne (Besty Clark). After his mother dies, he moves into her mansion and throws a lavish party in order to get Helena into his home. Anne catches on to his infatuation and is none too pleased, but Helena spurns Nick’s advances and instead winds up going home with someone else. After the party, Nick discovers Helena has left her purse and uses it as an excuse to have her back to the house. He desperately tries to win her over, but becomes angry and storms out of his house right into an oncoming car. She is the victim of a hit and run, and instead of calling for help Nick quickly brings her into the house and performs an emergency amputation of both her legs and keeps her there to heal. After Helena attempts to leave, Nick makes it clear that she is his prisoner by eventually removing her arms as well. When Helena’s former lover, Ray O’Malley (Bill Paxton) begins to realize that something isn’t right, and starts asking questions to try and find out what happened to Helena it looks like Nick’s world will come apart at the seams. Helena doesn’t know how far he will go to keep her as his prisoner, or how close Ray will come to discovering what Nick has hidden in the house, and what will be waiting for Ray if he finds out.
