The Phantom of the Opera is an Italian horror film that was adapted from Gaston Leroux’s novel, Le Fantome de l'opera by Giorgina Caspari and G3rard Brach. Directed by Dario Argento, the movie features Julian Sands, Asia Argento and Andrea Di Stefano. The story takes place in 1877 Paris. The sewer rats save a baby that was abandoned in their underground home in the Oppra de Paris. The child becomes an outcast who murders anyone unfortunate to venture into the underground cavern in the same way that rats get killed when they go above ground.

Dubbed the Phantom of the Opera (played by Julian Sands), he becomes enamored with opera singer, Christine Daae (played by Asia Argento). He uses telepathy to communicate with her and they embark upon a romantic relationship.

Baron Raoul De Chagny (played by Andrea Di Stefano) is an aristocrat who has also fallen for Christine. At first, Christine only offers him friendship. However, she later indicates that it is possible that she is in love with both of these men.

After they have sex, the Phantom keeps Christine in the subterranean cavern. Christine becomes angry with him and the way that he is controlling her. She says she despises him and he rapes her.

As he plays with the rats, Christine manages to escape. She runs to Raoul, and they go to the roof where the Phantom hears them. The next night, while Christine is singing, the Phantom descends down upon the stage and wisks her away.

Raoul and some others chase and shoot down the Phantom. Although very seriously wounded, the Phantom is concerned that the police may kill Christine when they find out that she is his mistress. As a result, the Phantom shows Raoul and Christine how to get to the secret waterway in the tunnels underground. Then he fights with the police to ward them off so that Raoul can row he and Christine to safety.
