Boys Don't Cry is a movie based on the real life events of Teena Brandon who is played by Hilary Swank. Brandon was born a female, but always had the belief of being male, so she goes by the name of Brandon Teena. Unlike young girls who follow lesbian instincts, Brandon wants to be thought of as a boy rather than as a girl. Brandon wears her hair in a short boyish style and dresses in boy's clothing, She adopts a way of speaking which also adds to her illusions of being a young man rather than a young woman. She manages to be accepted in groups of other young men as a male. Brandon ends up meeting a young woman named Lana whom she falls madly in love with. This meeting is due to a friendship Brandon formed with some guys in a local bar. One of the young men is the brother of Lana. Brandon ends up spending a lot of time hanging out with the group and dating Lana. Brandon also ends up getting involved in a bar fight, which lands her in a detention center for women. Lana, believing Brandon to be a boy, questions her about the placement. Brandon decides to tell Lana she was born with both girl and boy parts and is undergoing surgery to become just a boy. This is not actually the truth. Through a series of events, Brandon's buddies find out she is really a girl pretending to be a boy. They become very upset over being deceived. One night they get very drunk and corner Brandon outside where they take turns raping her. Brandon goes to Lana who convinces her to file a report against the men. While hiding out for protection, Brandon is found by the men and a horrifying turn of events follow. The story focuses on Brandon's search for identity and acceptance. It also shows the struggles people have with gender identity and how others often react unfavorably to how they choose to present themselves.
