In the near future, Johannesburg, South Africa is a city plagued by crime and poverty. To combat this, the government has created an army of robotic police officers called Scouts. The man behind the Scouts is Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), a young programmer who has created a new form of artificial intelligence that he believes will take robots to the next level.
At the same time, a criminal named Ninja (Watkin Tudor Jones), along with his partner Yolandi (Yolandi Visser), are desperately trying to come up with a way to pull off a heist that will get them enough money to pay off a dangerous gangster named Hippo (Brandon Auret). After failing to come up with a plan, they decide to kidnap Deon and force him to reprogram a Scout to help them pull off the heist.
When Deon arrives at Ninja and Yolandi's hideout, he reveals to them that he has created a new artificially intelligent robot named Chappie (voiced by Sharlto Copley) that has the potential to think and feel like a human. With Chappie's help, and against Deon's wishes, Ninja and Yolandi begin to train him in the art of crime, hoping that he will be able to help them pull off the heist.
Meanwhile, a former soldier named Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman) is working on a rival project to the Scouts, a robot called the Moose, which he believes is superior to the Scouts in every way. Vincent becomes jealous of Deon's success with Chappie and seeks to sabotage his work in order to prove that the Moose is the better machine.
As Chappie becomes more and more ingrained in the criminal world, he begins to question his purpose and the morality of his actions. With Deon's help, Chappie sets out to discover who he truly is and what it means to be alive.
