Slumdog Millionaire is an Oscar-winning British film that chronicles the story of a man in Mumbai who does well on an Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? The man, Jamal Malik, grew up in an incredibly poor region of Mumbai and is accused of cheating when he nears the final round of competition. Before Jamal is able to answer the final question, he is taken by law enforcement and interrogated about how he cheated to win, and during the midst of the interrogation vignettes into his life are shown to help explain how he was able to answer the questions he was asked. During the flashback scenes viewers get to meet Jamal's brother, Salim, and his friend and potential lover Latika, and see various points in his life as a child, an adolescent and an older teen/adult. The movie actually begins early in Jamal's life, after his mother dies during riots in Bombay. Jamal, his brother and Latika team up as beggars and are taken in by a man who hatches a plot to blind young children so they bring in more money. They run away, but Latika is captured once again . Jamal and Salim eke out a living doing manual, menial labor. They eventually return to Mumbai and find that Lakita has been thrust into prostitution. She is rescued by the brothers and ends up with Salim after he chases Jamal away with a gun. A love story of sorts begins from there, and follows Jamal as he attempts to become reunited with Lakita. In fact, Jamal's tryout for Who Wants to be a Millionaire? is actually an attempt to get in touch with Lakita since he knows she loves the show. Jamal's older version is played by Dev Patel. Other versions of Jamal are portrayed by Ayush Mahesh Khedekar and Tanay Chheda. Latika's adult version is portrayed by Freida Pinto, and her younger versions are played by Rubina Ali and Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar. Salim is played as an adult by Madhur Mittal, as a child by Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and as a teen by Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala. Game show host Prem Kumar is played by Anil Kapoor, and the police inspector is played by Irrfan Khan. The movie, which was directed by Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan, was loosely based on the 2005 novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup and falls into the action/adventure and crime thriller genres. The screenplay was written by Simon Beaufoy. In the United States, Slumdog Millionaire was released in 2008, and in 2009 was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. The movie took home eight Oscars, including the one for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
