A recent series of murders is getting attention of the San Francisco police department and two detectives, played by Holly Hunter and Dermot Mulroney, turn to a brilliant, albeit agoraphobic, criminal psychologist played by Sigourney Weaver in the hopes of capturing the killer before he makes his next move. The situation quickly becomes personal as Weaver begins to realize that she’s one of the killer’s targets. As the crimes take the form of past heinous acts of infamous murderers such as those of David Berkowitz, Jeffrey Dahmer and Albert DeSalvo, Weaver assists Hunter and Mulroney with her expertise and knowledge, hoping to get one step ahead of the killer before he is able to strike again. Director Jon Amiel worked with dark shadows and many close-ups of the actors’ faces, dutifully capturing the emotions of each character. His choice of the San Francisco Bay area, once beloved by suspense legend Alfred Hitchcock, contributes a film noir aura to the traditional murder mystery puzzle.
