This Oscar-winning masterpiece tells the story of Ada McGrath, a mute woman, sent to New Zealand for an arranged marriage. This 1850s period piece shows how Ada tries to communicate through her daughter, Flora, and through her prized grand piano. Though Ada's new marriage to the highly religious Alisdair has proven to be loveless, another man with an interest in the piano may offer the sort of slow seduction through Ada's playing. As a married woman in the nineteenth century, Ada must struggle with finding love in someone who is not her husband and what could happen if they are discovered. And, perhaps, Ada may yet find a voice of her own.
