In 1982, Larry Walters of San Pedro, California, made an ill-fated solo flight with his deckchair and 42 large helium-filled balloons. The local media went crazy trying to find his motivation for such a novel stunt. His story and antics captured the imagination of the film culture in Australia. Danny Deckchair is inspired by the antics of San Pedro's “Lawnchair Larry.” Danny decides to escape his lackluster life and dead end job by launching himself over the Australian countryside. He uses balloons and a favorite deckchair. Danny sets down in a quaint and foreign town filled with people who have never heard his name, or formed opinions about who he is. Danny (Rhys Ifans) quickly becomes a local hero and source for inspiration. The town he lands in is as deprived of inspiration as he. When Danny is given the opportunity to return home after months elsewhere, he is torn between the familiar and new. It's a tough choice considering the new town presents him with a comfortable life and a love interest in the person of Glenda Lake (Miranda Otto). Glenda is a kindred spirit completely spellbound by Danny's courageous desire to find happiness and meaning.
