A special bond is formed between four little girls in Louisiana in the late 1930's. The Ya-Ya Sisterhood is formed and sealed with a blood oath. They all swear loyalty for life to each other. They all go their own directions and begin their own journeys in life. During an interview Sidda, Vivi's daughter reveals that her work as a playwright has been influenced by negative experiences as a child. The reporter uses the interview to depict Siddalee Walker as abused and having terrible secrets. Siddalee's mother Vivi almost has a nervous breakdown after she sees all the untruths and innuendos in the article. She calls her daughter becomes agitated and hysterically hits the phone repeatedly on the table. She lashes out with hurtful words. Then she tells her daughter that she is dead as far as she is concerned. The daughter in turn does the very same thing to her phone and therefore they draw their battle lines between mother and daughter. The Ya-Ya Sisters hear of the war between mother and daughter and decide to bring them back together. They actually kidnap the young woman, give her drugs and bring her to Louisiana. They begin to reveal things to her including an album that is the keeper of the Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. The secrets reveal that the unsuccessful and often abusive marriage happened because of the lost love in the war. The daughter is still angry over the selfish characteristics of her mom. She actually thinks she actually needs therapy to overcome some of the issues her mother had. The Sisters begin to realize that the daughter needs to know the truth and reveal that Vivi had a nervous breakdown and was in an institution for a while for this. After this revelation, the daughter begins to understand and is able to forgive her mother. Vivi and the sisters make a pact and Sidda becomes a Ya-Ya sister.
