Set in Victorian England, the story of Doctor John Dolittle is filled with adventure. The scene is set with animals, song, danger, romance and heartwarming characters. Once a doctor of people, Doctor Dolittle finds he has the ability to communicate with animals. His newly discovered ability provides him the opportunity to leave his people practice and take up treating animals. His home is filled with an exotic menagerie consisting of anything between farm animals and a two-headed llama. The local judge brings his horse to Doctor Dolittle for treatment, and the horse tells his tale of vision problems to the doctor, who then prescribes glasses for the horse. The judge did not believe the doctor was able to talk to the animals. The judge’s daughter gets upset with the doctor for making a fool of her father, and the doctor finds himself in court. Doctor Dolittle tried to provide proof of his ability, but he was found guilty of fraud and thrown into prison. The doctor escapes, and with the help of friends Matthew and Tommy, heads off to sea in search of another adventure. Once at sea, they discovered that the judge’s daughter has stowed away on the ship because she has developed a crush on the doctor. The ship wrecks after a storm at sea, and they all find themselves stranded on an island. The castaways meet natives who have become educated through all the materials that wash up on their shores, so there is no loss of communication. The island is in danger of drifting into colder waters, and the doctor enlists the help of a whale to move the island. This causes unexpected damage, which enrages the natives, and they plan the demise of the castaways. Thus begins another adventure in escape.
