Drumline is a coming of age film from 2002 that is equal parts comedy, drama, and romance. Drumline tells the story of a young man Devin Miles, played by Nick Cannon, who is a street drummer in Harlem. The man is noticed by scouts from an elite Southern university who decide to recruit him to come drum in their marching band. At first, Devin is confident and he accepts their offer, believing that he will be a star once he gets down south. Soon he learns that there are challenges ahead and he must change and grow if he wants to make an impact on the University’s drumline. Much of the drama in Drumline comes from the relationship that Nick Cannon’s character has with the leader of the school’s marching band. The two men do not get along and they are in constant conflict. Devin has a cocky attitude and he believes that he is the bess drummer around. He becomes the only freshman to make the marching band’s elite level and he gets a senior girl, played by Zoe Saldana, to fall in love with him. In Devin’s mind, he is the big man on campus. However, he soon begins to meet a lot of challenges while he is playing for the band. The school’s marching band is considered to be the best among most colleges and universities and all the members are required to learn to read music and understand music theory. Devin has an attitude and doesn’t believe that he should be forced to do all this work. Initially, he attempts to rely solely on his tremendous talent. Devin acts up and starts a fight during a college football game. He is kicked off the team and his girlfriend is so embarrassed by his behavior that she breaks up with him. Devin considers going to a rival school to play on their drumline but he realizes that he still feels as if he belongs to his original squad. Devin comes up with a creative routine for the band to play at a competition and his coach, having faith in him, allows him to come back. Drumline is rated PG-13 and runs 118 minutes.
