This film occurred just a short time after the Guyana tragedy at the People's Temple settlement aroused public concern. It recounts the life of Jim Jones (depicted by Powers Boothe), a young man who became a charismatic leader and, some claimed, the mastermind of a cult. Criticism rose at his activities and those of his followers. Finally events reached a pivotal point when a member of Congress, played by Ned Beatty, decided to visit the Peoples' Temple compound in the midst of the jungle in order to conduct an investigation. James Earl Jones, Randy Quaid, and Meg Foster also star.
