Hangmen Also Die is a gripping and suspenseful war thriller directed by the legendary film maker Fritz Lang. Set during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in World War II, the movie tells the story of a group of resistance fighters who assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, the brutal SS officer who oversaw Hitler's occupation of the country.

The resistance fighter responsible for shooting Heydrich is Dr. Franticek Svoboda, a high-ranking official in the Czech government who has been forced into hiding to avoid being captured by the Gestapo. As the Nazis attempt to track down the assassins, Svoboda seeks refuge in the home of Mascha Novotny, a young woman who agrees to help him evade the authorities.

Mascha is plagued with guilt over her father's role in turning over Heydrich's name to the Nazis, leading to his assassination. She vows to Svoboda that she'll do everything in her power to help him evade capture and death.

The Gestapo embark on a ruthless campaign of retaliation against the Czech people, arresting and executing innocent civilians, in a collective punishment aimed at extracting information about the assassins. As they close in on Svoboda's whereabouts, he and Mascha are forced to go on the run, hiding in plain sight to avoid being caught.

The conflict escalates and becomes more perilous as the Nazis become more ruthless and cunning with each passing day. The film takes a sharp turn when it is revealed that Mascha's father had given up the wrong name to the Gestapo. It is now determined that the assassination's true perpetrator is a resistance leader named Karel Cernik, whom Svoboda had never met.

The drama unfolds as the Nazis implement devastating tactics to try to force Svoboda to confess to his involvement in the assassination, while Mascha risks her own life to keep him safe. A highly intense game of cat and mouse ensues as the resistance attempts to protect Svoboda from the Nazis.

The acting of the leading cast members is outstanding, with Brian Donlevy and Walter Brennan delivering awe-inspiring performances as Svoboda and his contact in the underground resistance movement. Anna Lee is equally impressive as Mascha Novotny, portraying an emotionally driven character caught between her conscience and loyalty to the resistance movement.

The use of black and white photography is remarkable and adds to the overall atmosphere of the movie's dark and tense setting. Fritz Lang's use of cunning camera angles and dramatic musical scores kept viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the movie.

The film's portrayal of the Czechoslovakian resistance movement is highly relevant to the wartime context of the period, making it a significant and important historical film. The movie is also notable for its portrayal of resistance fighters' audacious feats, the risks they took, and the vivid picture it paints of life in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II.

Hangmen Also Die is one of the few films that combined high-intensity action with depth and profoundness in its treatment of an era of turmoil and disaster in Europe. It is a film that leaves a lasting impression and is highly recommended for movie enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

Hangmen Also Die is a 1943 drama with a runtime of 2 hours and 14 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.4.
