Hard Labor is a dramatic film from 2011, directed by Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, that takes place in São Paulo, Brazil. The plot revolves around one woman’s struggle to achieve the American Dream while working as a maid in a wealthy household. Helena Albergaria stars as Helena, a lady who moves to São Paulo with her husband Otavio (Marat Descartes) and their young daughter to start a new life. At first, everything seems to be going well. Eventually, she lands a job as a maid in the home of an affluent couple. The couple, become some of the prominent characters in the movie, made up of elderly Edna (Lilith Lisboa) and her wheelchair-bound husband Antonio (Giovanni Gallo). Helena initially finds the work pleasant, and her employers seem kind and courteous. But as time goes on, the job becomes increasingly hard and the couple's sinister motives begin to emerge. Moreover, she is often the victim of degrading comments from the couple and is trapped in a cycle of hopelessness with seemingly no way out. As she continues to work for the couple, more and more bizarre and unnerving events occur. It seems as though the house itself is taking on a life of its own, and that Helena is not safe within it. The tension mounts as she tries desperately to find the truth behind the seemingly insurmountable obstacles and to uncover the forces that are somehow aligned against her. The story of Hard Labor is not only a story of class struggle but also explores the delicate balance of power dynamics between employer and employee. Helena, who is desperately trying to provide a better life for her family, is ultimately powerless and prey to the whims of her employers. Even as the truth of the couple's motivations becomes clearer, Helena is stuck in a Catch-22 situation in which resisting her employers could lead to ruin for her family. Despite its slightly supernatural and spookier aspects, "Hard Labor" is primarily a social realist drama that analyzes the difficulty of working-class life and the precarious status of immigrants in Brazil. The movie portrays the inequality that widens the gap between the wealthy and the poor. The acting in the movie is superb. Helena Albergaria delivers a powerful and emotional performance, conveying the character's desperation and fear with nuance and subtlety. Marat Descartes is equally talented, and the supporting cast all put in solid performances. The cinematography is another highlight of the movie.
