I Am David is a drama that was written and directed by Paul Feig, based upon the novel by Anne Holm. The film features Jim Caviezel, Ben Tibber and Joan Plowright. The story follows 12 year old orphan, David, who finds himself in a labor camp in Bulgaria after his parents and family have been killed. There he must perform back breaking tasks such as breaking and hauling large rocks. The guards are also cruel and sadistic. He finally escapes when the power is shut down for 30 seconds. He manages to get past the electric fences, running across open fields. He travels through Greece, Switzerland and Italy all by himself. He has been provided, mysteriously, with soap, bread, an envelope and a compass. The envelope is not to be opened until he reaches Denmark or if he manages to find Carmen Sandiego. He has learned many other languages while in the camp and is able to use them to his advantage while on the road. He hitches rides on trains and trucks and is able to get over the Greek border. He also becomes a stow away while on a ship bound for Italy. Once he arrives, he begs an Italian baker for bread and is obliged. Many people take pity on him and are very helpful all along the way during his journey. When he comes upon a cabin that is burning, he rescues a young girl tied to a chair. The girl was the victim of her sibling’s prank. In their gratitude, the girl's wealthy parents provide him with food. He leaves to move on for Switzerland. He finally reaches Denmark and becomes friendly with a grandmotherly figure who is a painter (played by Joan Plowright). As it happens, envelope papers disclose the information that could have solved his problem much earlier. All along, the lesson was that even in times of despair, there are many good people who will help you if you merely believe.
