Impulse is a 1984 drama, suspense, and romance movie directed by Sondra Locke. It features Tim Matheson as Stuart, a serial killer who has an uncontrollable urge to kill women. Meg Tilly plays Jennifer, a young girl who falls in love with Stuart after meeting him in a bar. This movie also features Hume Cronyn as a police detective, Lieutenant Frank Curtis, who is investigating the murders committed by Stuart.

The movie starts with Stuart driving around in an old van, looking for his next victim. He spots Jennifer walking home from work one night and offers her a ride, which she accepts. They end up at a bar, where Stuart buys Jennifer a drink and tries to get to know her. Despite Jennifer's initial hesitation, she starts to feel drawn to Stuart and decides to spend the night with him.

The next morning, Jennifer wakes up to find Stuart gone. She goes to work and tries to forget about him, but he keeps appearing in her thoughts. Stuart, on the other hand, is still out looking for his next victim. He finds another young girl and tries to kill her, but she manages to escape. The police start investigating the case, and Lieutenant Curtis becomes convinced that Stuart is behind the murders.

Meanwhile, Jennifer and Stuart continue their relationship. Jennifer falls more in love with Stuart every day, but she starts to get suspicious when she realizes that he has a collection of women's clothing in his van. She confronts Stuart, and he tells her that he has an uncontrollable impulse to kill women but that he has never acted on it before. Jennifer is shocked but decides to stay with Stuart and help him overcome his urges.

As the movie progresses, Stuart struggles with his inner demons, and Jennifer tries to help him overcome them. Lieutenant Curtis is closing in on Stuart, and the audience is left wondering whether Stuart will give in to his impulses or if Jennifer will be able to save him.

The movie's suspenseful plot keeps the audience on edge throughout the film. The director effectively builds tension and creates a sense of unease that makes the movie difficult to look away from. The performances of the three main actors, Tim Matheson, Meg Tilly, and Hume Cronyn, are also noteworthy. Matheson's portrayal of Stuart is chilling and convincing, while Tilly effectively depicts Jennifer's inner conflict as she tries to help Stuart. Cronyn's character as the detective is also well-executed, and his scenes help to add to the movie's overall tension.

Overall, Impulse is a well-made drama, suspense, and romance movie that is still worth watching today. The movie's subject matter is dark and disturbing, but it is handled well, creating a thought-provoking cinematic experience. The performances of the actors, the direction, and the plot all come together to create a movie that is both exhilarating and unsettling.
