Mafia! is 1998 spoof comedy parodying popular classics such as Martin Scorsese's Casino and Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather. It stars Lloyd Bridges, Jay Mohr, Christina Applegate, and Olympia Dukakis. Much like the films it spoofs, the movie is presented as a sequence of flashbacks. The two main characters are aptly named "Tony Cortino" and "Don Vincenzo Armani Windbreaker Cortino." The story opens as Tony gets into his car and it explodes in typical mafia fashion. The audience is then told the tale of Vincenzo, Tony's father, when he was a little boy 50 years prior. The plot takes the viewer to Italy, Korea, and Vegas as we watch one mafia gag after another. The jokes range from silly to slapstick. Critics did not view the film very favorably; however, spoof films generally have not gotten good reviews since the 1980's. Roger Ebert said he laughed during the film, and Entertainment Weekly thought it was not an original enough take on the genre. The movie did well in theaters. It tripled the production costs with over $30 million in box office ticket sales.
