Victoria, unsure of her future but knowing that she must soon leave the orphanage, heeds that advice of the nuns who run the orphanage and agrees to marry Oliver Thompson (Lithgow). Although Victoria is uncertain of exactly what she should expect as a wife she is totally unprepared for her husbands tendency towards cruelty and lascivious nature. The local minister, Dr. Finch, soon enters the Thompson's lives and introduces Victoria to the subject of hypnosis. Victoria becomes fascinated with the subject and attempts to share her enthusiasm with Oliver, who dismisses the topic as rubbish. Dr. Finch, however, soon changes his mind as he demontrates the power that hypnosis has by hypnotizing Victoira. Oliver quickly understands that, while Victoria is under hypnosis, she is susceptible to his nature and he is able to have his way with her. Oliver's plans for future attempts of his wife's conquest aren't realized as he soon becomes gravely ill. No one is certain as to what is causing his illness and watches as he is soon reduced to a shell of his former self as his health deteriorates rather quickly. Finally, Oliver dies; however, his father believes that there has been foul play and launches accusations against Victoria that she has murdered his son. The climax comes in the courtroom as charges are made against Victoria that she forced poison down Oliver's throat, however, there is no proof that he was forced to injest the poison. Victoria is soon acquitted of the charges and leaves for the States.
