Mindhorn is a British comedy film that was released in 2016. The movie follows Richard Thorncroft (played by Julian Barratt), an actor who was once famous for playing a detective named Mindhorn on a popular 1980s TV show. However, after the show was cancelled, Thorncroft's career went downhill and he became a washed-up actor who struggles to find work.

The story unfolds when a murderer on the Isle of Man demands to speak to Mindhorn in order to confess to his crime. The police enlist Thorncroft's help, as they believe that the killer is a fan of the TV show and may only speak to its protagonist. In order to solve the case, Thorncroft must confront his demons and reprise his role as Mindhorn, a character whom he believes to be a real detective with supernatural abilities.

The film is a hilarious parody of 1980s cop shows and detective films, as well as a commentary on the cult of celebrity and the nature of fame. Julian Barratt gives a brilliant performance as Thorncroft/Mindhorn, capturing the character's arrogance, delusions of grandeur, and desperate need for validation. Simon Farnaby is also great as Clive Parnevik, Thorncroft's former stuntman and current rival, who serves as a foil for the protagonist.

The supporting cast is equally strong, including Essie Davis as Patricia Deville, Thorncroft's former girlfriend and co-star, who is now a successful actress in Hollywood. Steve Coogan also makes an appearance as Peter Easterman, the TV executive who cancelled Mindhorn and who Thorncroft blames for ruining his career.

The film has a lot of fun with its concept, as it plays with the conventions of detective stories and cop shows. The character of Mindhorn is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Dukes of Hazzard's Bo and Luke, and the film's action scenes are delightfully cheesy and over-the-top. However, the comedy is also rooted in character, as we see Thorncroft struggling with his fading looks, his unhealthy lifestyle, and his resentment towards those who have surpassed him in life.

One of the film's strengths is its use of location, as it was filmed on location on the Isle of Man. The island's rugged landscape and quirky inhabitants provide a vivid backdrop for the story, and the film makes great use of its setting to add to the comedy and drama.

Overall, Mindhorn is a hilarious and witty comedy that deserves to be seen. It's a great showcase for Julian Barratt's talent, and a reminder of the importance of not taking oneself too seriously. With its clever writing, strong performances, and entertaining premise, Mindhorn is a film that will leave you laughing and smiling long after it's over.
