After he nearly loses his life on a reconnaissance mission, Quint Munroe (played by David McCallum) must lead a bomb attack to rescue a resistance fighter and other war prisoners being held captive by the Gestapo.
Their target is the underground tunnel in a chateau where they are keeping new weaponry based upon the V-1s that are being made. In coordinated raids, prisoners are being held in a chapel while in mass on Sunday. This is done to mobilize them in one place so that the French Maquis resistance can get them out quickly.
Father Belaguere (played by Michael Anthony) and an agent is murdered by a vengeful German officer, Lieutenant Schack (played by Vladek Sheybal). The senior officer with the captives is Squadron Leader Neale (played by Bryan Marshall) and he dies as a result of a German machine gun fire while comrades tried to break out.
Munroe and Scott are reunited after an aircraft is shot down. Scott suffers from amnesia and cannot recall his name or anyone else. He is uninterested in getting any help from Munroe and ignores even the mere mention of his wife. Scott risks his life and ultimately loses it to stop a German tank. He saves Munroe and the others, but it is too late for Flight Sergeant Wiley Bunce (played by Nicky Henson) and he dies.
When Quint comforts Scott's widow, Beth (played by Suzanne Neve), they develop new feelings for each other and rekindle what they once had very long ago.
