Mulholland Falls is a modern noir crime thriller from 1996, directed by Lee Tamahori. It follows four corrupt Los Angeles Police Department detectives as they investigate the suspicious death of a woman found at a construction site in southern California. Her bones have been crushed, and it turns out that she and the head detective, Maxwell Hoover, have a history together. Set in the 1950s, this movie uses all the popular noir tropes (chain-smoking detectives in fedoras, the femme fatale, gangster nightclubs) but with a new and modern edge, including an atomic bomb testing sub-plot, drug addiction, and a 90s all-star cast. Nick Nolte, Michael Madsen, Chazz Palminteri, and Chris Penn play the unorthodox 'Hat Squad', the vigilante cops barely on the right side of the law, while Jennifer Connelly plays the murdered young woman with an interesting past. John Malkovich also features as a retired army general with a suspicious secret, and Melanie Griffith plays Hoover's betrayed wife.
