Nothing Bad Can Happen is a German drama film directed by Katrin Gebbe and released in 2013. The movie explores themes of faith, violence and family bonds, and is based on true events. The story revolves around the life of young Tore, a homeless Christian who hitchhikes his way to Hamburg from the countryside. During one of his trips, he meets a group of young people who are somewhat interested in his religious beliefs, including Benno and Svenja. The religious tension between Tore and Benno starts to escalate soon when Benno makes a bet that Tore wouldn't be able to resist physical torment at his hands. The bet begins with small things like slapping, but soon escalates to more violent and sadistic behavior.

As the movie progresses, we watch Tore struggling to keep his faith and stand up to the vicious and sadistic group of friends. The harassment progresses to a level that shocks viewers, and it becomes evident that this movie is not for the faint of heart. The director of the movie seems to be unapologetic about showcasing the brutality and violence towards a young man who believes in God, in a story that is both challenging and intensely emotional.

Throughout the film, we also see Tore's relationship with his family, notably his aging mother who has a degenerative illness. Tore's world becomes shaken as the brutality of the group of young people becomes more and more intolerable, and he is slowly stripped of his faith and his other coping mechanisms. Tore wouldn't give up, though; he remains determined to prove his faith, which Benno sees as an opportunity to increase his control and to use Tore for sickening purposes.

The ensemble cast delivers outstanding performances, especially Julius Feldmeier, who portrays Tore. His subtle acting skills are not to be missed, as we see him transform from a meek and gentle soul to a man who has lost all faith in humanity. Sascha Alexander Gersak also delivers a brilliant and unparalleled performance as Benno: his portrayal of a sadistic antagonist is one of the best in recent memory.

As the story progresses, it becomes apparent that the story is not just about the brutality and violence towards a young man who believes in God. It also explores a phenomenon of faith being tested by sadistic violence, which is both deeply disturbing and intriguing at the same time. The movie is an excellent study of human nature under stress with a portrayal of harrowing violence that is not for the timid.

Katrin Gebbe does an exceptional job with Nothing Bad Can Happen, and the story is gripping and intense from start to finish. Despite the grueling content, it provokes some interesting, thought-provoking questions about faith and the limits of forgiveness. It can also, for some, be a disturbing allegory for the power dynamics that occur between the oppressor and the oppressed in our society.

Overall, Nothing Bad Can Happen is a strong film that should not be undervalued or overlooked. Its intensity and grittiness are sure to challenge audiences, but it's a worthwhile watch for fans of powerful, emotional and challenging cinema. Nevertheless, viewers who are sensitive to violence or who might be potentially offended by the portrayal of religious themes should approach it cautiously, because this movie is decidedly not for everyone’s taste.

Nothing Bad Can Happen is a 2014 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 50 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9 and a MetaScore of 51.
