The 2003 drama film Radio starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ed Harris earned a box office $53,293,667 and a 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was directed by Michael Tollin, and he stated it isn't just your average drama film, it is also a motivational film as well. "Radio", a 23 year old mentally challenged young man, is seen pushing a shopping cart throughout the streets. He's then seen by a football team coach at a high school (Coach Jones), and Jones takes pity on Radio and asks him to help build the enthusiasm of the team. The team members then abuse the young man by locking him inside a tool shed. Jones then confronts the team and brings Radio home, where his mother is introduced. She explains how Radio's father past away a few years ago. This then causes Jones to spend more time with Radio, but this concerns the other fathers of the team members. One of the fathers then suggests Jones to stop associating with the young disabled, as he sees the boy to merely be a distraction to the success of his son. Coach Jones is then a bit resistant, and it's later discovered that the main reason for this resistance was induced by an incident during while he was young where he didn't do a thing to help a retarded who was locked right under a house. Radio then eventually begins to go to high school, and it's apparent that he never really completed any formal schooling. Right after struggling, Radio learns how to read. While in school, Radio is still bullied by Johnny who is the son of the father that doesn't like Radio, and even tricked Radio to entering the females locker room, getting him in trouble. However, right after Radio declines to speak to the administration on how told him to do so, Johnny gains great respect for Radio, and starts to doubt his dad's father's wrong impressions about Radio.
