Men of Honor
- 2 hr 9 min
Set in the world war II era, this military drama touches on everything from alcoholism, to racism, to family values. Cuba Gooding Jr plays the part of an African-American navy man, who has hopes and aspirations of improving his standing in the Navy. After witnessing Master Chief Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro) attempt a rescue at sea, he decides that this is a field that he wants to get into. As a strong swimmer and an enlisted man, this should not be a problem. With nothing but determination and courage, Carl Brashear impresses Master Chief Billy Sunday that he has what it takes to do the job, unfortunately racism is still rampant and some superiors do not want to see a black man in such a high position. The diving school is under the guidance of Mister Pappy (Hal Holbrook), and if Sunday has any plans of cutting him some slack, Mister Pappy does not. An eccentric commanding officer if ever there is one, Mister Pappy watches as the determination of this young recruit begins to win over his colleagues. After everything is said and done, Brashear graduates from the school and heads off to perform his duties on the high seas, only to be shot down due to an accident which causes him to lose part of his lower leg. With the same determination that gets him to this point in his life, Brashear decides that he still wants to achieve his life long dream and requests the use of an artificial limb. Based primarily on the relationship that develops between Gooding and De Niro, this highly acclaimed powerful drama is directed by George Tillman Jr. Written by Scott Marshall Smith and filmed entirely in the United States of America, it earns several nominations from various groups, including Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture from Image Awards. This is certainly not a fast paced action kind of movie, but what it lacks in explosions and adventure, it makes up for in drama and suspense. Some other well known faces are Charlize Theron, Michael Rapaport & Aunjanue Ellis.
