It tells the story of a poor young girl named Jui'er who must enter into a pre-arranged marriage with a much older man named Li Datou who owns a distillery. But when he dies unexpectedly, Jui'er inherits ownership of the business. She manages to turn around the distillery's faltering fortunes, survives a kidnapping plot, and faces the invasion of the Japanese Army once World War II begins. But destiny awaits her as she serves her hungry workers in the nearby sorghum fields.
