The filming took place in New Orleans, Louisiana during the Mardi Gras celebration. Nicolas Cage plays the character Will Gerard of a modest English Literature teacher at the Rampart High School. His young wife Laura Gerard played by actress January Jones is a musician that plays in the orchestra. The movie begins with the young couple celebrating a wedding anniversary at the Lafitte Hotel in New Orleans. They celebrate with Will’s best friend Jimmy that also works at the high school and is played by actor Harold Perrineau. Laura’s best friend Trudy is played by the actress Jennifer Carpenter which also plays in the orchestra. One evening after orchestra rehearsal Laura is sexually assaulted at gun point in her vehicle. While, on the opposite side of town, Will and Jimmy are playing a game of chess. Will rushes to the hospital to see how his wife Laura is doing when a man approaches him to discuss how an organization can help him seek justice for what the rapist did to his wife. The stranger’s name is Simon, played by the actor Guy Pierce. Simon states that the vigilante group takes care of people that the justice system lets go. Will at first doesn’t agree with Simon's method of justice. Simon tells Will that there’s no financial obligation but in return requires a small favor to help out the organization.
