The Boxer is a 1997 Irish film directed by Jim Sheridan. The film focuses on a boxer named Danny Flynn played by Daniel Day-Lewis. Flynn is released from prison as the film opens. He served a fourteen-year sentence because of his involvement with the Provisional IRA. Flynn reconnects with his old girlfriend Maggie played by Emily Watson. Maggie is marred to another IRA member who is still doing prison time. Flynn opens up a sporting club for local kids and only wants to live a normal life. Flynn wants to live a normal and peaceful life but he is caught up in IRA violence and personal jealousies.
