My Left Foot is a dramatic film that tells the story of Christy Brown, a Irish man who was born with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a nervous disorder and Christy has lost control of his body with the exception of his left foot. Even though Christy comes from an extremely poor family, he still feels love and manages to get great success as an artist and writer. The Brown family lives in Dublin, Ireland and there are thirteen children in the family. Christy finds it hard growing up with so many siblings because he is unable to play with them. Christy can only hold things with his left foot. His right foot and hands are paralyzed. As a result, he is forced to learn to paint and write using only his left foot. Christy struggles throughout his life with people who judge him based up his disability. They think he is worthless. Christy's mother however, sees the full potential that her son has. She recognizes that her son is incredibly intelligent and has many gifts to share with the world. Christy is not always a lovable character to have around. He can be extremely arrogant and rude and has an ego that matches his immense talent. He flirts with women all the time and even experiences problems with alcohol. The movie never makes him appear to be sympathetic or likable. Christy carries a lot of anger with him. He is unable to get women to notice him because of his condition but he continues to get crush after crush. He falls in love with his physical therapist at one point and is devastated when she becomes engaged to someone else. The film is comprised to look like home movies in some parts as a way to show the intimacy and difficulties that Christy experiences living his life. It is shot in flashbacks as Christy tells viewers the story of his life.
