Based on Frank McCourt's best selling memoir, Angela's Ashes is a dramatic look at the life of Frankie, an Irish boy growing up in the impoverished town of Limerick during the 1930's and 40's. Frankie is born in Brooklyn, where his family has emigrated seeking opportunities, but life is hard during the Great Depression and financial troubles plague the family, compounded by his father's struggles with alcoholism. After the death of one of his siblings, the family moves back to Ireland, only to encounter equally desperate circumstances plus the added problem of prejudice against Frankie's Northern Irish father. From a young age Frankie has to work at whatever small jobs he can to help his family, all the while dreaming of how to make enough money to escape the poverty around him and travel back to America, and the city of his birth. Directed by Alan Parker, the movie showcases an excellent cast that includes Robert Carlyle and Emily Watson as Frankie's parents. The role of Frankie is played by three talented young actors at various ages, and narrated by Andrew Bennet.
