Lucas is a shepherd boy who is blinded by lightning during a thunderstorm. He lives near an abbey, and the nuns there decide to take him in, despite the misgivings of the priest, Father Thomas. He stays in the stables with his sheep, and his faithful sheepdog helps him to see where he is going. While some of the children who spend time at the abbey give Lucas a hard time, he also finds friendship with a girl who has never seen snow. He is given a plum role in the Christmas pageant, which is accompanied by a Christmas miracle.
