Before and during World War II, Nazis, under orders from Hitler, stole many great pieces of art from private collections and placed them in hiding. As the war neared its end, orders went out that if Germany should fall these great works of art were to be destroyed. The Allies put together an unusual assortment of soldiers to prevent this destruction and to recover this collection of artwork which was created over the past centuries and was irreplaceable and of high importance to the European cultural identity. The movie is based on the true story of a platoon comprised mostly of art scholars, historians and museum men and not of career soldiers. These dedicated men were willing to risk their lives to save items of great cultural importance. Their single goal was to rescue the captured art from behind enemy lines and get the art back to the rightful owners. While displaying a reverence for protecting great art from ages past, this movie manages to inject a humorous twist to the plot.
