The New World

"Once discovered, it was changed forever."

The New World is a dramatic retelling of the story of Pocahontas which stars Colin Farrell as Capt. John Smith and Q’orianka Kilcher as the legendary Pocahontas. The film takes place in 1607 as three English ships arrive on the shore of the New World with a royal charter to initiate a colony in the New World. John Smith is on board one of the ships as a prisoner, who is due to be executed. The moment he lands onshore, but is given a pardon because of his abilities as an explorer.

While things initially are going well for the budding colony, food shortages and sickness soon begin to take hold. So John Smith is dispatched with a small group of willing and able individuals to make contact with the native inhabitants and trade for supplies. John Smith and his men make contact with the natives. However, they are taken prisoner and question about their intentions for the land unfortunately for Smith he is unable to give a satisfactory answer, and is again due to be executed. The princess Pocahontas comes to his rescue, and his life is saved once more. Smith spends a considerable amount of time with the natives as their prisoner and comes to admire their ways and develops a deep love for Pocahontas. He is released in the spring and returns to Jamestown, only to find it in complete chaos and not likely to survive the winter. So Pocahontas comes to the rescue with much needed supplies and the colony is saved.

This film is a very dramatic love story, mixed with the trials and tribulations of survival not just physical survival but of humanity and understanding as well. As both the native and English population must learn to set aside their differences and adapt to the new realities of their world and accept each others differences so that they can make the best world possible.
