Homer's epic poem provides the background for this 1997 series. Utilizing a framework structure, the program opens with the birth of Telemachus to Odysseus, the epic hero, and his wife, Penelope. Starring Armand Assante, as the virile Odysseus, and Greta Scacchi, as the devoted wife, the birth of their son also heralds the call to adventure for Odysseus.

Menelaus and Agamemnon, Greek kings, arrive in Ithaca to elicit Odysseus' help. Sworn by a blood-oath, he cannot refuse. With the protection of Athena, he leaves his loving family to fulfill his destiny. The scenes of the war between the Greeks and the Trojans provide the audience with an understanding of Odysseus' prowess, ingenuity, and valor. As the war ends, Odysseus' hubris makes him a target for the wrath of Poseidon. His journey home becomes thwarted by conflicts with creatures, gods and goddesses.

During his twenty-year absence, Telemachus' coming of age and Penelope's arduous attempt to thwart off suitors provides the setting for tensions and conflicts that await Odysseus' return.
