The Perfect Man is a romantic comedy that stars Heather Locklear and Hilary Duff as a mother and daughter who both have the same goals to find stability in their life and a true love for the mother. Locklear plays Jean Hamilton. She is an accomplished baker but is unlucky in love. She is a single parent of two daughters and has to move her family every time that she has a failed relationship, which is far too often. Hilary Duff plays Jean’s oldest daughter, Holly Hamilton. She is the film’s chief protagonist. While she very much loves her mother, she is seeking the chance to stay in one place. Upon arriving in their new city, Jean gets a job at a bakery and meets Lenny. Lenny is a nice guy and is quickly infatuated with Jean, but everyone can clearly see that the two are not a very good match. Holly can see that things are going to go poorly with that relationship and expects that it would result in another move to another city and another school. She has met friends at school and doesn’t want to move again. Holly and her friend Amy hatch a plan to create a fictional perfect man to interact with Jean in letters and over the internet. Holly seeks out Amy’s uncle Ben. He is an eligible bachelor and owns an Italian restaurant. They try to find out what a perfect man would say when courting a new woman. The plan works temporarily; Jean corresponds with the perfect man that Holly has created. Things later spins out of control, and she makes up reasons why the perfect man can’t meet or speak to Jean in person. Holly then approaches Ben to portray the mystery man for Jean. Things don’t seem that they will work, but Holly will do her best to play matchmaker, for real this time.
