The Rains Came is a 1939 romantic drama film based on the novel of the same name by Louis Bromfield. Directed by Clarence Brown, the movie is set in the fictional Indian city of Ranchipur during the monsoon season. Myrna Loy plays the role of Lady Edwina Esketh, a British aristocrat who is visiting India with her husband, Lord Albert Esketh (played by Nigel Bruce). Edwina is a bored and unhappy woman who is tired of her loveless marriage and seeks excitement elsewhere. She finds it in the form of an Indian doctor named Major Rama Safti (played by Tyrone Power).

Meanwhile, a devastating earthquake strikes the city, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. In the aftermath, Rama Safti proves himself to be a hero, saving many lives and earning the respect of the people of Ranchipur.

As the monsoon season arrives, so does the charismatic and womanizing Tom Ransome (played by George Brent), a longtime acquaintance of Edwina's who is also in India. Edwina is immediately drawn to Tom, and they begin a passionate affair.

However, their happiness is short-lived as a deadly epidemic breaks out in the city, killing many and causing chaos among the survivors. Edwina and Rama Safti work together to treat the sick and try to halt the spread of the disease.

The movie is notable for its stunning visuals and impressive special effects. The earthquake and flood scenes are particularly impressive, especially considering the limitations of special effects technology at the time.

The performances are also noteworthy, particularly those of Loy and Power. Loy is superb as the conflicted and ultimately tragic Edwina, while Power is charismatic and commanding as the heroic Rama Safti. Brent is also effective as the charming but ultimately shallow Tom.

Overall, The Rains Came is a compelling drama that explores the complex relationships between people of different races, cultures, and class backgrounds. It also highlights the destructive power of natural disasters and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

The Rains Came is a 1939 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.8.
