In this understated horror film, a family in 1600s New England is shunned by its community and forced to move to a remote homestead. On their own, they're plagued by strange happenings and begin to suspect they're being stalked by a sinister presence. Praised by critics, the film was less well received by horror fans who expected more active scares. The film follows the family as they are forced to live on their own when they offend the puritanical sensibilities of their fellow villagers. Life on the frontier is harsh, and the work is unending. The specter of potential death hangs over them constantly. As strange happenings start to unsettle the family, they begin to turn suspicious eyes on one another. Their seems to be witchcraft afoot, and no one is quite sure where the sinister forces will manifest themselves. Consistently unsettling, The Witch builds toward an unrelentingly disturbing climax. The film opened in 2015 to broadly positive reviews from critics. Although it initially met with skepticism from moviegoers who were expecting something a little more obvious and gory, it has enjoyed cult-like appreciation since.
