Troop Zero is a 2019 American comedy-drama film that revolves around a young girl named Christmas Flint, played by Mckenna Grace, and her mission to join the Birdie Scouts, a fictional version of the Girl Scouts in 1977 rural Georgia. Christmas aspires to leave her small town and make a name for herself in NASA as the first female astronaut. She believes that joining the Birdie Scouts will help her achieve this goal as the winners of the Jamboree talent contest will get their recorded voices sent to space for extraterrestrial life to hear.

However, her attempts to join scouting groups in her town fail as they believe Christmas doesn't belong there. Christmas is an outcast at school and has no friends except for her one-eyed cat, Sergeant Pepper. Despite the repeated rejections, Christmas is not demotivated in the slightest, and she decides to start her own Birdie Scout troop, 'Troop Zero.' In the process of forming a team, Christmas befriends other girls, each unique in their ways, including the leader and the intimidating Hell-No Bell, played by Viola Davis, and Miss Rayleen, played by Allison Janney, a whiskey-guzzling social outcast.

Miss Rayleen works as a scientist, and lack of funding on her project to launch a rocket to space forces her to become the Troop Zero's leader. The Troop Zero takes the underdog position in the competition against the much more privileged troop that Hell-No Bell leads. Their journey from forming a team to preparing their performance and winning the competition makes up the rest of the plot.

Apart from Christmas's determination, what makes Troop Zero a heartwarming and emotional movie is the emotional depth of each character. The film carries an important message of inclusivity and self-acceptance, especially for children who face constant bullying and underestimate themselves. The movie shows how despite coming from different backgrounds, every character has something unique that they bring to the table, and together they can achieve anything they set their hearts to, even if they are considered an underdog.

Alongside Christmas Flint, every character in the movie played their part to perfection, especially Viola Davis as Hell-No Bell. The way Viola Davis portrayed the character of the tough but caring leader of the rival group was commendable. She beautifully conveyed the challenges Hell-No Bell faced as a black woman in a small southern town in the 70s. As the story unfolds, Hell-No Bell slowly overcomes her life's challenges and finds hope and support from her troop, eventually becoming Christmas's biggest ally in her mission to achieve her dreams.

Jim Gaffigan plays Brenda, Christmas's father's deputy, who joins as the Troop's designated driver. His goofy yet endearing character was a perfect addition to the otherwise stern and serious group of women.

Directed by Bert and Bertie, and written by Lucy Alibar, Troop Zero uses its period setting to explore themes that are still relevant today, such as social class and gender barriers. The witty humor, heartwarming plot, and remarkable cast make the movie a delightful watch for the whole family. The story manages to capture the spirit of determination, friendship, and self-acceptance, delivering an enjoyable and positive message that will inspire both young and old viewers alike.

Overall, Troop Zero is an inspiring movie that will leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Although it is set in the 70s, its message of inclusivity is still relevant today, and it is a story that is sure to inspire and entertain anyone who watches it.

Troop Zero is a 2020 comedy. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.9 and a MetaScore of 58.
