How to Get Away with Murder is a legal drama/mystery set in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It stars Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, a criminal law professor at the prestigious Middleton University. The show follows the professor's personal and professional life. In her professional life in addition to being a law professor, Annalise Keating is also an excellent defense attorney. She hires some of her best students to work with her at the law firm and they all become embroiled in a perplexing case. Eventually they become entwined in a difficult murder case.

To most people Annalise Keating has the perfect life. She's brilliant, creative, charismatic, and passionate about the law. She has an interesting, often exciting job. Plus she is married to Sam Keating, a handsome, distinguished, well-liked psychology professor who also works at Middleton University. But there's a lot more going on in Annalise Keating's personal life than meets the eye. Unbeknownst to almost anyone she is secretly involved in a relationship with Philadelphia detective Nate Lahey.

The show is full of courtroom drama where Annalise and her team of students, associates, and investigators do battle with a tough, smart, experienced district attorney. The people her team defends are no choir boys. Many are accused of some of the most heinous crimes imaginable. Annalise fiercely defends her clients using all the weapons in her arsenal. Her arguments are brilliant and her tactics effective. But she sometimes pushes the line between the letter and the spirit of the law.
